Penwortham Town U 10’s (2009 – 2010), did what most children could only ever dream about by playing on the hallowed turf at Wembley. They got invited to take part in the 2009 Festival of Football which is run by McDonalds and the FA. The event runs annually and McDonalds selects one Charter Standard U 10’s Club from each county in the country as a reward for their efforts.
In order not to miss out, the manager Gareth Gray flew back form his holiday in Portugal for the day, to allow his own son to play, while another player returned form the South of France, again for the day.
The day began by playing 3 games at Northwick Park, which is about 2 miles from Wembley, then it was off to Wembley in the afternoon to play one 7 a side game on main pitch, which was split into four quarters. Before entering the Stadium, the lads were all handed a Penwortham Town commemorative shirt for the day, which included their own surname on the back and on the front the date was embroided under the badge. Once inside the ground, lads managed to sit in the executive seats next to the dug outs as they waited for their turn and even managed to have a team photograph with Sir Geoff Hurst. Trevor Brooking was also in attendance. Despite being on top in their game against Crawley Juniors, it finished 0-0. There was one final highlight, when the lads were given the honour of going up to the Royal Box and collect a medal and wave to their parents in the stand.
The lads that got the opportunity to play on the hallowed turf were Andrew White, Sam Dears, George Dears, Harvey Falconer, Nathan Carroll, Finlay Woods, Matt Howarth, Daniel Gray, Jack Gray, David Thomas and Jonathan Stevenson. Along with Gareth Gray (Manager), Mick Dears (Asst Manager), Warren Gray (Colts Secretary) and Matthew Gray (Asst Secretary)
